Did you know you can drive a three-wheeled car with a motorcycle licence? You’ll need a full A motorcycle licence for any three-wheeler with more than 15kW (20hp) these days and that’s certainly the case with an electric experimental three-wheeler that Morgan has just revealed.

Morgan calls it the XP-1 (‘experimental prototype’) and it’s intended as a development vehicle for future electric Morgan sports cars. Anyone of a certain age will know that Morgan has a proud and long history of three-wheelers – two at the front, one at the rear – and they are Big Fun to drive.

The striking prototype is not intended for production but will help form ideas for driving character, powertrain development, in-house EV competence and training and new features. ideation and testing.

Matt Hole, Chief Technical Officer, Morgan Motor Company, said: “As we embark on our electric journey, this prototype will become a focal point of the engineering and design process, providing a wealth of insight and helping to build up our in-house EV capability.

“We are in no doubt that we can ensure future electric Morgan sports cars retain the core appeal of our current range, meaning they are fun to drive, lightweight, handcrafted and bespoke. We will be relentless in our pursuit of preserving these characteristics for our customers for generations to come.”

A key point about the XP-1 is that it’s no heavier than the standard Super 3 it’s based on. It has a bespoke interior display which Morgan expects to continually evolve, based on on how users interact with the vehicle.
